The Biomedical Engineering PhD Program emphasizes the highest quality engineering education, scholarly research at the forefront of biomedical engineering, and service to the biomedical engineering profession. Completion of a minimum of 48 hours of graduate credits to include: a minimum of 24 credits of course work beyond the master’s degree and a minimum of 24 credits of dissertation research.

Biomedical Engineers
91ÖÆƬ³§ knowledge of engineering, biology, and biomechanical principles to the design, development, and evaluation of biological and health systems and products, such as artificial organs, prostheses, instrumentation, medical information systems, and health management and care delivery systems.
Engineering Teachers, Postsecondary
Teach courses pertaining to the application of physical laws and principles of engineering for the development of machines, materials, instruments, processes, and services. Includes teachers of subjects such as chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, mineral, and petroleum engineering. Includes both teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research.
Mechanical Engineers
Perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment. Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment such as centralized heat, gas, water, and steam systems.
Electrical Engineering Technologists
Assist electrical engineers in such activities as process control, electrical power distribution, or instrumentation design. May prepare layouts of electrical transmission or distribution systems, supervise the flow of work, estimate project costs, or participate in research studies.
Requirements

Completion of a master's degree in a closely related field is expected. However, students who have completed 24 credits of graduate courses in an appropriate field from an accredited institution or have demonstrated an exceptionally high level of academic capability may petition for direct admittance into the program.

Recent scores, typically, not more than five years old, on the Graduate Record Examination's (GRE) verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing sections must be submitted by all applicants.

Three letters of recommendation (typically at least two of which are from faculty in the highest degree program completed when the application is within five years of graduation from that degree program) are required.

The applicant must submit a resume and a statement of purpose and goals.

Foundation knowledge in physics, basic chemistry, computer programming, and mathematics is expected.
For Admission to the Biomedical Engineering Program
A minimum GPA of 3.50 (out of 4.0) is required of most students. A student with a lower GPA meeting 91ÖÆƬ³§'s graduate admission requirements and with evidence of a high level of professional capability may be eligible for admission to the program upon submission of a petition to the graduate program director.
